Arkwrights Cromford Mill

1771

Arguably the start of the factory system, Arkwright built the first water powered cotton spinning mill here in 1771, which signaled the end to the cottage spinning industry. A second mill was added in 1776 after the first had more than proved it 'self.

Sadly all that is left is the mill pond up in the village of Cromford and these stripped out buildings. I understand that there are moves afoot to reinstall some period machinery and open some of the buildings as yet another museum.
