Impressions of:-

The California State National Railway Museum

Sacramento, California, USA

I again indebted to Art, my Californian Friend, for taking me here in May 2002. More so as it is not a sphere of interest to him and he planned the trip off his own bat. I did not know it existed until he said we were going.

My initial impressions of the place where that it was large, airy, well kept and, like most places on that side of the pond, thankfully well air conditioned. But it was dark, very dark.

Surprisingly the place seemed to be very un-commercial. I don't remember seeing any catering on site. It may have been there, but I certainly missed it. All it seemed to have was a small gift shop, quite reasonably priced for such a place.

Being a digital camera user (No way can I call myself a photographer) I took the pictures, not expecting to get anything out the other end. What I did get was a mass of black when I recovered them back at his house. Since then I have done what I can with them and the results are shown here. My one excuse is that the camera is only 1.3Mp, so there is not much to work with.

All in all the place was quite extensive with much to recommend it to any, with even a remote interest in Railways or the 'Wild West'.
Since Sacramento is not exactly on the tourist trail for people from this side of the Pond, I would suggest that a diversion to see the Museum and the old town area it is in is worth the effort.
